Entrance Requirements

Where we have vacancies, pupils are welcome to join us at any stage of the School, having successfully sat the appropriate entry tests. The information below primarily pertains to entry to our First Form (Year 7), Third Form (Year 9) and Lower Sixth (Year 12). If you are interested in entry to the School in any other year, please contact the Admissions team directly.

First Form (Year 7)

2023 Entry Registration Deadline – Friday 4th November 2022
2023 Entry Junior Entrance Examination – Friday 18th November 2022 (SVPS applicants)
2023 Entry Junior Entrance Examination – Saturday 19th November 2022 (External applicants)

Pupils wishing to join our First Form (Year 7) will be required to take an online Junior Entrance Examination. These are held for all registered First Form applicants in November, prior to entry to the School the following September.

The Junior Entrance Examination is administered online using the ISEB (Independent Schools Examination Board) Common Pre-Test. Further details are available here. There is no specific preparation required for this test, but a familiarisation test is available here. In addition to that, parents may wish to consider purchasing example tests published by the GL Assessment Group.

For September 2023 entry, Sutton Valence Preparatory School pupils who will take the test on Friday 18th November and then all other applicants will take the test on Saturday 19th November 2022. Pupils with examination concessions may be asked to sit the test on Tuesday 22nd November and, according to the final number of applicants, there may be a further sitting later in the Michaelmas Term. Special arrangements will be made for pupils who live outside the UK. The closing date for registration to sit the entrance test is Friday 4th November 2022.

Third Form (Year 9)

2025 Entry Registration Deadline – Friday 21st October 2022

The primary route of entry to our Third Form (Year 9) is via Deferred-Entry. As such, any pupils seeking entry to the School in Third Form 2025 or beyond are advised to apply for a place for Deferred Entry whilst in Year 6, or before. This route requires candidates to sit the ISEB (Independent Schools Examination Board) Common Pre-Test at their current preparatory school in the Michaelmas Term of Year 6. Special arrangements will be made for pupils who live outside the UK. In addition to the Common Pre-Test, all applicants must meet with the Headmaster before an offer of a Deferred Entry place is made. Further details are available here.

Pupils currently in Year 7 or 8 who wish to be considered for a place in our Third Form (Year 9) but have not taken the ISEB Pre-Test whilst in Year 6, should contact the Admissions Office for further details of entrance requirements.

Please note that any pupils joining Sutton Valence School in the Third Form (Year 9) from preparatory schools are still expected to take the Common Entrance (or equivalent) examination in the Summer Term of their Year 8, currently scheduled to take place between Tuesday 6th June and Friday 9th June 2023. The results will be used for setting purposes only.

Lower Sixth Entry (16+)

Pupils wishing to join our Sixth Form are expected to achieve at least 32 points across six GCSE subjects. Applicants will also be assessed by the Headmaster, Senior Deputy Head or Academic Deputy Head.

Other Year Groups

Entry to the Senior School is primarily to the First Form or Third Form but, where there is availability, we welcome applications for entry to other year groups. Please contact the Admissions department (admissions@svs.org.uk) for more information.
