To encourage our community to explore TV shows and books in other languages, the MFL department has shared its recommendations on shows and books they are currently devouring.

Currently watching – Call My Agent (Dix Pour Cent) on Netflix

A French comedy series about a talent agency in Paris that is currently trending on Netflix. The cast includes lots of well-known French actors and it has been given great reviews in France and in the UK.

Currently reading – Winter in Madrid by C J Sansom

Winter in Madrid is set in 1940 at the end of the Spanish Civil War with General Franco considering whether to abandon neutrality and enter the Second World War. It is a vivid and haunting depiction of wartime Spain which offers a remarkable sense of history unfolding, and the profound impact of impossible choices.

Currently watching – Marseille on Netflix

A French drama series that tells of power, corruption and redemption, set against the rich backdrop of the French port city of Marseille.

Current reading – L’anomalie by Hervé Le Tellier

Winner of the literary prize Prix Goncourt, Le Tellier’s French thriller L’anomalie is set in 2021 on a flight between Paris and New York. The novel is narrated by 11 different passengers on the flight and raises questions about whether, if we were offered a second life or a second chance, we would have enough imagination and generosity to share our life with a double.

Currently watching – Braquo on Amazon Prime

Very dark series about a police squad at the edge of the law. Four officers have their lives turned upside down when their colleague, Max, committed suicide, following a case in which he is unfairly blamed.

Currently reading: Code 93 by Olivier Norek

The first of Olivier Norek’s Banlieue trilogy, published in France as Code 93 and in England as The Lost and the Damned, is set in the district where the author lives and where he has worked for the past 18 years as a police lieutenant. Olivier Norek’s first novel draws on all his experience as a police officer in one of France’s toughest suburbs – the same experience he drew on as a writer for the hit TV series Spiral.
