Clay Coasters

In Design Technology, Year 4 became Roman artisans; designing and making mosaic-inspired coasters. They used their existing knowledge of Roman mosaics to influence the decoration on their clay coaster.

Using wooden batons and a rolling pin, the children turned their blob of terracotta clay into a geometric shape. Symmetrical, repeated patterns and images from everyday life were drawn and pressed into the clay tile which, when fired and glazed, will ensure that their coaster is waterproof.

Year 4 investigated a variety of coasters to support their designs, ensuring their finished product was fit for purpose, as well as being aesthetically pleasing.
