Owing to learning about ‘how war affects children’, all Year 6 children were successfully evacuated from Kent to North Wales on Tuesday. Travelling by steam train from Tenderden to Llanderwu in often very crowded carriages, all children were required to keep their identity cards and gas mask boxes about their person at all times.
Children were also required to be able to produce a valid ticket for their entire journey to show the military police escorting the train. Rations were limited due to an unforeseen power cut on the day before travel, and the local spiv seemed to be full of bluster and no actual chocolate, but all children successfully arrived at their destination at the end of a long and somewhat inclement day.
Parents will be relieved to hear that their learning will continue forthwith. Our thanks are due in particular to Mr Evans of Sutton Valence for ensuring a smooth organisation of the evacuation.
