Leadership and Responsibility

Leadership in the Sixth Form is practical, visible and rooted in responsibility. Pupils are encouraged to take on roles that require judgement, initiative and the ability to work with others.

Prefects and Heads of House

Sixth Form pupils can apply to become Prefects or Heads of House, roles that involve representing the School, supporting staff and guiding younger pupils. The selection process includes a written application and an interview with senior staff, ensuring that those who step into the role demonstrate the qualities valued at Sutton Valence, including clarity of communication, reliability and consideration for others. They guide younger pupils, represent the School at events, assist staff and help set the tone for the wider School community.

Sports Leaders

Sports Leaders follow a structured programme that trains them to plan and deliver coaching sessions. Each week they work with younger pupils under the supervision of sports staff. Places are limited and awarded to pupils who show potential as positive role models.

CCF Leadership (NCOs)

Within the CCF, pupils follow a progressive leadership pathway. Many progress into NCO roles, supporting instruction, leading training and taking responsibility during field exercises, roles which demand calm decision making and teamwork.

Mentoring & House Roles

Many Sixth Form pupils support younger year groups through mentoring or by running clubs and societies. These quieter forms of leadership are highly valued, helping pupils develop consistency, empathy and the ability to work with others in different contexts. Pupils can also take on roles as Wellbeing Ambassadors, contribute to the TIDE group promoting inclusion and diversity, or join the Eco Committee, which leads pupil‑driven sustainability initiatives. Together, these roles allow pupils to influence the culture of the School in meaningful, everyday ways.
