Forest School: Come Rain or Shine

One of the key features of our Nursery is the strong emphasis on outdoor learning, including our Forest School programme. From the earliest stages, children are encouraged to engage with the natural environment in ways that build confidence, resilience and curiosity.

Outdoor learning gives children the space to explore at their own pace, take manageable risks and solve problems through play. Whether they are balancing on logs, investigating mini‑beasts, building shelters from natural materials or creating artwork inspired by the seasons, children learn through hands‑on experience and active exploration.

Forest School at Sutton Valence supports children’s physical, social and emotional development in a calm and nurturing setting. Activities such as using the mud kitchen, collecting natural materials, outdoor cooking and simple tool use help develop fine and gross motor skills, cooperation and independence.

Spending time outdoors also encourages imagination, concentration and a growing appreciation for the natural world. Even at this young age, children begin to reflect on what they have tried and achieved, developing a sense of pride in their learning and a strong foundation for future growth.

Our child has flourished through Forest School. They come home muddy happy and full of ideas. It has helped them grow in confidence in a way the classroom alone never could. Nursery Parent
