Drama at Sutton Valence School helps pupils build confidence and clear communication. In the early years, pupils take part in role play and storytelling that support language development and help each child feel comfortable speaking in front of others. As pupils move into Prep, they work with a specialist Drama teacher who introduces improvisation, basic performance skills and short scripts. These activities support clear speech, good listening and positive teamwork. Pupils can also take LAMDA lessons and examinations. These give families a clear measure of progress in communication and performance and can support learning in other subjects.

Music enrichment is an important part of life at the Prep School. Pupils have regular chances to explore music beyond their lessons through instrument tuition, performances and group activities.

Many pupils choose to learn an individual instrument with our visiting music teachers. Free trial lessons help each pupil find the right instrument, and lessons can include preparation for graded exams, solo performances and ensemble work.

Pupils gain regular experience of performing through termly solo concerts and year group events. Once they are ready, pupils can join our string groups, wind groups, rock band, ukulele group or orchestra, which support shared listening and teamwork.

Singing also plays a key role in School life. Our choirs are open to all pupils who enjoy singing, and the Chamber Choir provides a space for more experienced singers to develop their skills further. These groups perform at School concerts and play an active part in our musical calendar.

Dance is introduced from Reception and continues throughout the School, both within the curriculum and through a range of co‑curricular clubs. Led by our specialist Dance teacher, pupils develop coordination, balance, agility and musicality in an energetic and enjoyable environment.

Dance encourages creativity as pupils explore movement together and gain confidence in expressing themselves. Alongside improving fitness and posture, sessions build cooperation, focus and a shared enjoyment of movement.

Art continues beyond timetabled lessons at Sutton Valence School. As an Artsmark‑recognised school, we offer pupils a range of opportunities to explore new materials, build skills and extend their creative work.

Pupils take part in workshops with visiting artists, gallery trips and events that connect classroom learning to real creative practice. Clubs and drop in sessions give pupils time to try new processes, work on personal projects and grow in confidence.

Artwork is displayed throughout the School to celebrate effort and progress. Exhibiting their work helps pupils take pride in what they create and supports their confidence in sharing ideas with others.
