Navy CCF Field Day to Portsmouth
Eighteen Navy CCF cadets enjoyed an action-packed field day to Portsmouth, travelling by coach on Wednesday and staying overnight at Fort Purbrook. Perched on the heights overlooking Portsmouth, Fort Purbrook is one of the Victorian Palmerston Forts, built in the nineteenth century as part of Britain’s coastal defences. Today, it serves as an outdoor activity and training centre, providing an ideal setting for adventurous learning.
After arriving and settling in, the cadets travelled to HMS Excellent on Whale Island for their evening meal. They then returned to Fort Purbrook to take part in archery and bouldering activities, testing both their concentration and physical skills while enjoying some friendly competition.
Thursday’s programme was originally planned to include mountain biking at Queen Elizabeth Country Park and kayaking on the Chichester Canal. Unfortunately, instructor illness meant that the kayaking session could not take place. However, a swift change of plans ensured that all cadets were able to take part in the mountain biking activities instead.
Supported by three Royal Navy instructors, the cadets tackled the trails with great enthusiasm and determination. While there were no serious injuries, one cadet took a tumble and grazed his chin before bravely getting back on his bike and successfully completing the course, demonstrating the resilience and perseverance that are such important qualities within the CCF. A great time was had by all.
