A Memorable Rugby Masterclass with Jonny Wilkinson
On Monday, we were delighted to welcome Rugby World Cup winner Jonny Wilkinson to Sutton Valence School, giving pupils a unique opportunity to learn from one of the game’s most respected players.
Jonny began his visit by leading an hour-long kicking clinic for girls and boys from across the School. He shared the techniques, habits and mindset that helped him reach the very top of the game, encouraging pupils to embrace practice, repetition and attention to detail. His session demonstrated how success is built through commitment, perseverance and a willingness to keep improving.
He then joined our 4th Form boys during their Games afternoon, offering coaching points, encouragement and insights from his own playing career. His passion for rugby was evident throughout, as was his determination to help every pupil get the most from the experience.
Long after the scheduled finish, Jonny remained with pupils, answering questions, signing boots, shirts and caps, and making time for everyone who wanted to meet him. His generosity, humility and enthusiasm left a lasting impression on all who attended.
Reflecting on his visit, Jonny said:
“I had an amazing time working with the Sutton Valence School rugby players. Such awesome energy and spirit made it immensely fun and easy to find new space for connecting, improving and growing. Everyone I met from the School, from pupils to teachers to parents, were so respectful and kind! Thank you!”
It was an unforgettable afternoon of rugby and a fantastic opportunity for our pupils to learn from one of the sport’s true greats.
Thank you, Jonny, for an incredibly inspiring visit to SVS.
