Debating Success

The Sutton Valence debating team travelled to The Judd School to face Bennett Memorial Diocesan School in the first round of the English-Speaking Union’s National Mace competition.

Elina W, Jemima S, Monty T and Charlie W (Upper Sixth) represented the school admirably, arguing in favour of the motion, “This House would allow under-16s to use social media, but require platforms to take stronger steps to protect them from bullying and predatory behaviour.”

Opening the debate, Elina delivered a passionate defence of young people’s access to social media, challenging the case for an outright ban and arguing that greater responsibility should fall on the companies themselves. Jemima followed with a forensic dismantling of the opposition’s arguments, while Monty brought the debate to a close with a strong summary of our case, responding confidently to questions from the floor.

Facing stiff competition, the team secured a well-deserved victory and will now progress to the next round in January.
