Boarding with Care

Sutton Valence has two boarding houses: Westminster for female pupils and St Margaret’s for male pupils. Each house is led by an experienced Housemaster or Housemistress, supported by tutors and matrons who provide guidance, care and consistency. Boarding staff encourage independence while ensuring pupils receive targeted academic support through supervised study, homework and prep time.

Pastoral Support and Wellbeing

Pastoral care is central to boarding life. Staff are trained in mental health first aid and work with counsellors and wellbeing coordinators. The School promotes the Five Ways to Wellbeing – Connect, Be Active, Take Notice, Keep Learning and Give – helping pupils maintain balance. Wellbeing Student Ambassadors, including international pupils, support inclusion and peer care.

Cultural Awareness and Inclusion

Boarding at Sutton Valence benefits from a diverse international community. Pupils are encouraged to share their backgrounds and support one another, helping new arrivals settle quickly and feel valued. Events such as Chinese New Year and international food evenings allow pupils to celebrate and explore different cultures.

Facilities and Meals

Boarders are fully catered for, with three daily meals, but also have the option to cook for themselves and make snacks at other times in the fully-fitted House kitchens. Students often return to the boarding House to find it filled with the welcoming aroma of the matrons’ freshly-baked treats. They enjoy comfortable rooms and each House benefits from its own common rooms and social spaces for the household to come together once they have completed their prep work. Boarders also have supervised access to the superb on-site facilities, such as the sports centre and swimming pool.

Academic and Language Support

Pupils with English as an additional language receive tailored EAL support to build confidence in lessons and daily life. Teachers provide guidance in subject-specific vocabulary and study strategies to ensure pupils can fully participate in school life.

Weekend Life

Weekends balance relaxation and activity. Pupils can take part in trips, cultural visits, sports fixtures and creative workshops, or spend time in the house cooking, socialising or enjoying film nights. Boarding provides a safe, structured and supportive environment where pupils can grow and thrive.
