School Life as an International Boarder
International boarders play a full and active part in life at Sutton Valence. From their first day, pupils are supported to settle into School and House routines, meet new people and feel confident in their surroundings. Strong pastoral care, academic guidance and a warm, inclusive community help pupils adjust quickly and make the most of the opportunities available to them. The sections below give an overview of what life looks like for international boarders at our School.
Settling In and Support
International boarders receive a structured induction that introduces them to School routines, academic expectations and life in the Houses. Pupils are guided through practical matters and, where possible, linked with staff who speak their language. This support helps them settle quickly and understand how life at Sutton Valence works.
Daily School Life
Pupils join lessons, clubs and activities alongside their peers. Cultural events, societies and regular trips offer opportunities to meet others, explore new interests and feel included in the wider community.
Wellbeing and Pastoral Care
Wellbeing is central to the international boarding experience. Nurses, counsellors, tutors and House staff work closely together to provide accessible, trusted support. The School culture encourages respect, kindness and inclusion, helping pupils feel secure and connected.
Boarding Houses
Westminster and St Margaret’s offer a friendly, structured environment led by experienced Housemasters or Housemistresses, supported by tutors and matrons. Boarding provides stability and space for pupils to build independence, with supervised prep and easy access to staff when needed.

Community and Cultural Life
Boarding reflects the diversity of the School. Pupils share their backgrounds and traditions, and Houses celebrate cultural events such as Chinese New Year and international food evenings. These moments help new pupils feel valued and create a strong sense of belonging.
Outstanding Facilities and Daily Living
Boarders enjoy high quality, comfortable rooms, common rooms and fully equipped kitchens. They receive three meals a day in the Refectory, with snacks and cooking available in House. Matrons often bake for pupils, adding a warm, homely touch to evenings and weekends.
Academic and Language Support
Pupils have supervised prep and access to subject teachers for guidance. Those using English as an additional language receive tailored EAL support, building confidence in lessons and daily life and helping them engage fully with School life.
Weekend Life
Weekends offer a balance of activity and rest. Pupils can join trips to local attractions, cultural visits, sports fixtures and creative workshops, or spend time in House studying, cooking or relaxing with friends. The aim is to create a safe, sociable and enjoyable experience that feels like home.
Leadership and Development
Leadership opportunities are embedded in school life. Pupils can take on roles as House or Prefect leaders, join the Wellbeing Student Ambassador team, or participate in the Combined Cadet Force (CCF). These experiences help them grow in responsibility, teamwork and resilience; skills that prepare them for life beyond school.
Chapel and Values
The Chapel provides space for reflection and shared values. Pupils of all faiths are welcome, and assemblies encourage respect and consideration for others.
