Governors and the United Westminster and Grey Coat Foundation

Each Sutton Valence School governor has been carefully selected for their expertise and love of education. Collectively they possess a wide range of experience in education, senior roles in business and the professions. Their enthusiasm for their role remains undiminished, despite the fact that some of them have been with the School for a number of years.

Responsibility for the varied areas of School life, for example, Finance, Buildings, Education and Personnel, are devolved to a sound committee structure, which reports back to the full Governor body three times a year.  A governor sits on the School’s Health and Safety Committee.

The Strategy Committee meets once a term and comprises the Chairman and Deputy Chairman of Governors, the Headmaster and the Chairmen of the Governors' Education, Personnel and Finance committees. This innovative initiative led to the Governing Body being nominated in the 2013 Independent Schools awards for 'Outstanding Governing Body'.

The School is part of The United Westminster and Grey Coat Foundation. The Clerk to the Foundation is a resource to the School and Governing body, keeping all constituents appraised of changes in:

•    Legislation;
•    Employment rules and regulations;
•    Pensions;
•    Other items that need to be considered on Governors’ agenda papers.

The Foundation’s Financial Secretary is a considerable resource to the School Bursar and the Governors’ Finance and Buildings Committee.

The Foundation and its Schools

The United Westminster and Grey Coat Foundation is an educational charity and its registered number is 1181012.

The Trust's object is "the provision and conduct of three schools in which the religious instruction is in accordance with the principles of the Christian faith".

The origins of the Charity go back to the sixteenth century, when Lady Dacre founded Emanuel School in 1594. Westminster City School is a direct successor of St Margaret's Hospital (or the King's School) founded in 1633, Palmer's School founded in 1654, and Emery Hill's School founded in 1674. The United Westminster Schools' Foundation was created in 1873 following the recommendations of the Endowed Schools Commission. Sutton Valence was founded by William Lambe in 1576 and the Worshipful Company of Clothworkers administered the School until 1910, when it was transferred to the Foundation. In 2019, the United Westminster Foundation merged with the Grey Coat Hospital Foundation.

Other schools in the Foundation are:

Emanuel School an independent co-educational secondary school for 950 day pupils in Wandsworth, London SW11. The Head is a member of the HMC.

Westminster City School, a five-form entry, voluntary-aided, non-denominational Church comprehensive school for 800 boys in Westminster.

Queen Anne’s is an independent boarding and day school for girls aged 11 to 18, situated just north of the River Thames and Reading town centre and occupying a 35-acre campus of beautiful grounds.

The Grey Coat Hospital, a Church of England school and Specialist Language College offering a challenging educational experience for girls from 11 to 18, and for boys in the Sixth Form.
