Awards for Old Suttonians

When a Suttonian's time at the School comes to an end, the hope is that they are able to continue their relationship with Sutton Valence through the Old Suttonians network. Part of this alumni provision is to offer support to Old Suttonians across all generations as they look to take their first steps into further education, or the world of work. The first few years after leaving the School are seminal in their personal development and the following awards, announced annually, hopefully provide some financial help as they move on from SVS.

George Lovett Bennett (Headmaster 1883-1910) and Henry William Hunting (Staff 1885-1920) were important figures in the development of the School at the turn of the Twentieth Century and its alumni provision. Together, they founded the Old Suttonians' Association and Hunting was a major player in the organisation until his death. To mark their legacy, the incumbent Headmaster selects four pupils each year who have recently left the School, to receive awards to recognise their contribution to a wide variety of aspects of School life. The monetary award is designed to help the respective recipients with their chosen degree course. Recipients of the award also have their names enshrined on an ‘honours board’ currently mounted on the walls of the Refectory.

Pupils are encouraged to apply for financial support  to help them conduct an academic ‘project’ during a gap year between School, University or any career they want to pursue. The wording ‘project’ is deliberately vague so as to maximise the variety of schemes that might be undertaken. Each application (to the Development Office) must be accompanied by a resume of its intended actions and motives and is reviewed on its merits – applicants may be asked to attend a meeting to explain their proposal in more detail.
