HIKSVS opens its doors to pupils

08 September 2017

The start of this academic year sees a hugely significant landmark in the long history of Sutton Valence School. As many of you will be aware, we are immensely proud that, after well over two years’ hard work of planning, construction and recruitment, the HIK SVS International School, a co-educational preparatory school and the first international school under the Sutton Valence brand and ethos, opened to its first year-groups of pupils in Tianjin, China, in the last week of August 2017.

Peter Ferrier, the Founding Head, has been on site since April; a number of Governors including the Chairman, Lady Vallance, Mr Grindlay and Miss Corkran, visited in July for the official opening and from 21st August the first pupils were welcomed and are now enjoying their lessons and activities. This is an exciting time for everyone involved with this ambitious project, seeing it all come to fruition!

The buildings and facilities are state of the art and reflect the Sutton Valence ethos and educational philosophy of the 'Four Journeys’. The Chinese and international teachers are highly experienced and have great expertise, and parents have committed enthusiastically to the high standards and values of the School. The School is vibrant, happy, dynamic and welcoming! Peter Ferrier comments, ‘This is wonderful to see. It’s a very special time and truly rewarding to be part of the founding team of this brand new international school. Recruitment is strong and we are already planning for the School’s further expansion as year-groups are increased next September.'

Not only is this an historic development in the history of the Sutton Valence Schools, but we can also look forward to a close relationship between our schools and HIK SVS International School in the coming years, especially for Sutton Valence Preparatory School, as a number of challenging joint curriculum activities are planned both this term and over the whole year.

The collaboration between the Headmaster Bruce Grindlay and Old Suttonian Karl Yin has been the driving force behind the establishment of HIK SVS International School. The Head of Prep, Claire Corkran and staff of our Preparatory School have also embraced HIK SVS and are working in close collaboration with staff in Tianjin. The Headmaster speaks for all of us when he says, ‘ This is a very proud moment in our rich history, as we step on to the international stage for the first time and welcome pupils, parents and colleagues in our sister school in Tianjin. Our very special brand and educational ethos are in demand internationally; SVS is acknowledged as a centre of excellence. As it grows and develops from such an exciting start, we wish HIK SVS International School every success!’
