Pupils entering the School at Third Form (Year 9) can apply for academic scholarships. All pupils must be recommended by their respective preparatory school for scholarships at this level.  The examination is sat before the Common Entrance Examination (CEE) and we are happy to make practice papers available before then. If a pupil is awarded a scholarship they do not have to sit the CEE.  Similarly, if pupils do well, but are not awarded a scholarship, they may be excused the CEE. The Academic Scholarship Examination comprises test papers in English, Mathematics, Science and either French or Spanish.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can apply?
Scholarships are available to candidates entering the School at 11+, 13+ and 16+. Anyone submitting an application for a scholarship will need to be available to come to the School on specific dates during the academic year prior to entry for assessment. Existing pupils cannot apply but can be recommended by the respective Head of Department.

How do I apply?
All candidates must be registered with the School before submitting a Scholarship Application Form. Please also note the closing dates shown in the table above.

Do I need to speak with my child’s current Headmaster?
We do recommend that applications have the support of your child’s current Headmaster or Head of Department.  Just before the assessment date, we will write to your child’s school for a reference.

Can my child apply for more than one scholarship?
In addition to an Academic Scholarship, candidates can apply for a maximum of two assessments (from Art, Design and Technology, Drama, Music and Sport). Any candidate applying for more than one scholarship may need to return to the School on more than one occasion to complete the assessment criteria.

Is there a fee to apply for a scholarship?
No. The only requirement is that a pupil is registered prior to submitting a scholarship application. In order to be registered, the standard £100 Registration Fee is due.

How much funding will I receive if awarded a scholarship?
Individual subject awards are generous. The value of each scholarship is at the discretion of the Headmaster with the percentage offered being applicable to either day, full or part boarding fees. Holders of an Academic Scholarship who also gain an individual subject award may have their total percentage increased to up to twice the value of the individual subject award. Any further financial assistance may be obtained through means-tested bursary.

How long will the scholarship last?
Scholarships will last for the duration of the pupil’s time at the School, provided they continue to fulfil the criteria of the award.
