Academic Introduction

At Sutton Valence Preparatory School we pride ourselves on providing outstanding learning opportunities for all children.  Well-qualified, dedicated and experienced teaching staff deliver a vibrant, diverse and challenging curriculum, with favourable staff:pupil ratios and superb facilities allow the children to make excellent academic progress.

From Nursery to Year 2, throughout the Early Years, the children are predominantly taught by their Form Teacher, with some specialist teaching in Music, Games, PE, Swimming, French and Dance.

Once they reach the age of seven (Year 3), specialist teaching becomes a more integral part of their curriculum, when the children are taught Science, Art, Design and Technology, ICT, Music, French, PE and Games by subject specialists.

From Year 5 onwards, all the children’s teaching is by subject specialists. This is an excellent grounding in their preparation for any senior school and ensures that academic ‘value added’ is achievable for all children.

From the start of the Lent (Spring) term, children are set for Maths, English and Spelling. In each of the subject sets, they cover the same curriculum, but at a pace appropriate to their abilities and needs.  For those children who may need further help, small group or individual teaching may be offered.

Our aim is to provide each and every child with a diverse and unique range of learning opportunities, challenging enquiring minds and encouraging individuality, installing the courage and determination to ‘think out of the box’ whenever possible.
