Drama at Sutton Valence Prep School is a highly-valued part of our curriculum. Through drama we can rehearse important life skills: speaking and listening; creative thinking; expressing emotions and developing interpersonal skills.

In our Pre-Prep Drama is taught as part of the English curriculum; linking to stories and role play. Children in each year group also get the opportunity to perform a play; Nursery and Reception do a nativity at Christmas and both Year 1 and Year 2 classes put on their productions during the year.

From Year 3 in Prep, the children have class Drama lessons taught by subject specialists. They work on games, role play, improvisation and using scripts in order to develop specific skills in speaking and listening, performing and creative thinking.

Children develop confidence and combine many skills through putting on a performance to an audience, gaining a huge sense of achievement from working together to produce outstanding results on stage. Year 4 put on a production each year, with Year 3 involved as support.

As the children get older they focus on scripts and stage production, which culminates in an end of year play for Year 6. Recently these have included Oliver and Rats. All Year 6 children play a part, including opportunities to work back stage or participating in the frequent music and dance elements. Those children in Year 5, who are beginning to show a flair for drama, also get involved in this production. Traditionally, these plays are a highpoint for the children leaving the school!

At SVPS we want all children to become confident speakers, both with their peers and with adults. Consequently, from Year 2 to Year 4 children are expected to take part in LAMDA exams, but in Years 5 and 6 this becomes optional for those children who are interested, to carry on and take higher grades.

We also like to give the children opportunities to experience the theatre and we have regular trips, including to the West End, as well as having theatre companies perform for us at school and watching plays put on by students from our senior school, Sutton Valence.

As part of our work on Shakespeare, pupils in Years 5 and 6 take part in a “Play in a Day” and perform a unique version of well-known Shakespearian plays.

For Year 5 children who are particularly interested in taking Drama Scholarships there is a Drama Scholars club where they hone their skills in performing.

Drama is life with the dull parts left out.”  Alfred Hitchcock
