Vocal Ensembles

Vocal singing has always been strong at Sutton Valence School. Indeed our head singing teacher is a moderator for the Associated Board and as well as an international examiner and adjudicator.

Every year the top singing pupils take part in a masterclass with Elizabeth Ritchie FRAM, a singing professor at the Royal Academy of Music.

Chapel Choir (Mr Horley and Mr Soman)

The Chapel is central to the School community and also is one of the first buildings that visitors see on entering the drive. The Chapel Choir numbers approximately 60 pupils and meets twice a week throughout the year. It performs once a week, every Monday morning, singing in the School Chapel service. As well as this, it performs at special services throughout the year such as Eucharist’s, Carol Services and Confirmation Services. It has performed evensongs at Canterbury, Winchester, Southwark and Rochester Cathedrals. Regular tours feature to centres such as Cologne and Rome, where the Chapel Choir has performed in the Pantheon and St. Peters.

Repertoire includes:

  • Schubert’s Mass in G
  • Vivaldi’s Gloria
  • Wood’s O Thou the Central Orb
  • Faure’s Cantique de Jean Racine
  • Rutter’s The Lord Bless You and Keep You

Chamber Choir (Mr Grindlay)

The Chamber Choir numbers about 25 and is taken from the senior singers of the Chapel Choir. Its repertoire is the lighter side of music ranging from Simon and Garfunkal to spirituals. It has recently performed at services in London churches, by invitation.

A Cappella Choir (Mr Soman)

A small ensemble of 10-12 pupils who arrange and perform more popular songs. They have performed in workshops with Voces 8 and taken part in concerts at Christchurch Spitalfields and St Peter’s Eaton Square.

Other choral ensembles include the Senior Barbershop, the mixed Junior Choir and the Senior Girls’ Choir.
