The Association was established over 100 years ago “to provide a means whereby all former pupils and staff of Sutton Valence School may to their mutual benefit maintain a link with each other and with the School”.
The relationship between the OSA and the School has become a very strong one through a close working relationship with the Development Office. The OSA continues to look for ever more ways to benefit its 4,500 members and the wider School community.
The Association provides a benefit to members by enabling social and business networking, which spreads through over 40 countries worldwide. Many Old Suttonians have taken advantage of the advice and hospitality offered to them whilst travelling the world during their gap year or for business purposes. Current pupils have also been able to take advantage of professional advice and mentoring from Old Suttonians during Fifth Form for work experience and during Lower Sixth at the time of university application.
As well as hosting its own Annual Dinner in conjunction with the Annual General Meeting, the OSA supports the School Development Office programme of gatherings of Old Suttonians throughout the UK and overseas, which occur at least annually:
• Year group reunions every three years;
• Regional reunions;
• Country reunions;
There is also an open invitation to Old Suttonians to attend School functions, for example matches, concerts, plays and the Carol Service.
OS sporting events are becoming more and more popular as venues to meet up with old friends, of which the following occur every year:
• Cricket Week;
• A Golf Society (participating in a national competition and organising golf days for its own members and friends);
Additionally, the OS compete against the School in an annual hockey match (men and ladies) and shooting is fast becoming established both for informal matches at School, but also competing at Bisley when appropriate.
Bursaries and Sponsorship
The OSA sponsors a few School-nominated students at university through the Bennett Hunting awards and also promotes the ‘Enterprise Award’ as an opportunity for OS seeking financial help with a project during a gap year or while at university.
Old Suttonians are kept up to date with news of the School and their friends through a variety of media and publications: The OSA Newsletter, e-Bulletin and The Suttonian. We are also actively developing our section here on the School website to provide a ‘breaking news’ service and Facebook groups have been set up to facilitate communication about events and sporting fixtures.
In order to maintain and improve the benefit offered to Old Suttonians, life membership of the OSA is charged on the School bill as an extra; currently £30 per term, payable over the first nine terms of a pupil’s career at the School. Those joining for a period of less than three years will be billed accordingly. Membership ensures a lifelong link with the School and the wider Suttonian community
