Year 1 made a fantastic first impression in the Art room on Thursday. It was their first foray into the Prep Art room and they, along with Mrs Savage, were very excited! The children created artwork inspired by Impressionism and one of its founders, Claude Monet. They embraced their French focused Art lesson, by admiring Monet’s water lily paintings and his passion for painting the outdoors; in order to capture the mood and atmosphere - the impression of a certain light, time of day or subject matter.
Year 1 began by drawing a Japanese bridge over a pond of colourful water lilies. With concerted effort and oil pastels, they tried to create depth and perspective in their compositions, by drawing larger water lilies in the foreground and smaller ones in the background. To complete their masterpieces, they enthusiastically applied watercolour washes to add colour and vibrancy. Monet, the Impressionist master, would be proud of the mini-Impressionist artists’ wonderful water lily creations.
