IAPS Hockey 2018

05 October 2018

The U11A team travelled to Hurstpierpoint College, on Tuesday, for the IAPS Hockey Tournament. The team consisted of four Year 6 and three Year 5 girls. The bare seven, no substitutions! We all knew it was going to be a tough day of Hockey playing many schools larger than ours. An inspirational talk before the tournament from Mrs Allison encouraging the girls to:

  • go out and play their hockey;
  • do their best; that is all we ask of you;
  • enjoy the day and work as a team.

And that they certainly did! The skill level, teamwork and passion that these seven girls gave was truly inspirational and earnt them a maximum of 15 points from five wins in the group stages, the only team to do this. Knowing they were top of all four groups gave them the confidence to start their quarter-final game on a high, which resulted in a 2-0 win against Ardingly. In the semi-finals, we were up against local rivals Ashford (a very strong side), a win here would see us into the final. It was one of the toughest matches which saw Ashford score early. However, we hit back as best we could but unfortunately time was up! Although the girls were disappointed to have come this far and not get to the final, they knew they still had the play off for third and fourth. We ended up playing a very skilful Danes Hill side. The girls were keen to give it their all and, even if they had already played 70 minutes of hockey with no substitutions, they absolutely did, only losing 1-0 to a well-deserved team. Seeing them placed fourth overall out of 24 teams was an amazing achievement. Girls, you did yourself, the School and certainly Mrs Allison and Mrs Jacobs proud! A hugely successful day!
