This week has been a great time for trying out new things out. We took delivery of a professional green screen, which can be used as a resource for lessons. One child exclaimed, “Wow, it’s just like the ones YouTubers use!”. So it is already a very popular addition to the department.
We have been using it in a variety of different ways in both ICT and Humanities. In our Coding lessons, we used it to create animated characters based on our own bodies. After photographing the subject, the green background is removed and the different frames are animated in Scratch
In Humanities, Year 6 used the green screen to record their own travel guides to China. They researched different locations and wrote facts about them. They are then going to find photographs of their locations to replace with the green background for the final video.
In Humanities in Year 4, the children made their own weather forecasts. They used a variety of apps on the iPads to make them. They researched the weather for a selected rainforest using the Wunderstation Weather app. Next, they created their forecast animations in the Explain Everything app. This lets them move weather icons around a map, annotate it and zoom in and out. All this is recorded live and turned into a video. They then filmed their reports in front of the green screen with a script based on their research. Finally, they combined both video files in the Green Screen app and cropped out the classroom.
During our Moving Up morning, Year 5 (to be!) filmed their hopes and aspirations in front of the green screen which was later replaced in the final video with a view of the School.
Everyone is very excited at the prospect of what can be done with the green screen.
