A team of Prep School girls entered the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) Engagement Competition run by BAE Systems, the world's most advanced, technology-led defence, aerospace and security solutions company. After a nail-biting wait the girls were delighted to hear they got through and were excited to join teams on the final day’s competition late last term.
Arriving early, the pupils were given their security tags before enjoying some warming hot chocolate. After a brief welcome and an ice breaker the teams were put to work with a Mechano model-building challenge. The girls’ teamwork was put to the test as they built a helicopter, thinking strategically about how best to use their time.
Presenting their helmet design and model to the judges, the team was eloquent and confident and impressed the judges with their use of IT. As they waited for the results, the children had a tour and even got to fly the simulator fighter plane from take-off to landing, a real highlight for all. Out of 100 Schools, the team came second! The judges were really impressed with SVS team effort and superior research. We are proud of how the girls conducted themselves throughout the day and they represented the School very well.
