Community Introduction

As Deputy Head it is my privilege to oversee our community, which is structured in such a way as to create a caring environment where pupils can be challenged, where they can be given the confidence to be curious and above all where their contributions can be harnessed to the benefit of all. Every person is valued as an individual with their own distinct sense of worth and potential. Consequently our School strives to provide the seedbed to allow these gifts and talents to grow, develop and ultimately flourish. It is no coincidence that individual and collective achievements are celebrated on a weekly basis during the Headmaster’s assembly.

Our pastoral system emphasises the importance of responsibility, leadership, kindness and friendship amongst our pupils. It is founded on the principles of trust, tolerance and openness. As such, we expect all at Sutton Valence to treat each other with respect, humanity and care. Consequently individuals are obliged to recognise that our differences make us collectively stronger. Great emphasis is therefore placed on the need for all to appreciate and celebrate the diversity of backgrounds, world-views and attitudes expressed by those in our community.

These values are at the heart of our Tutorial system which is designed in such a way as to ensure that the pupils can be suitably supported in their endeavours. Tutors meet with their tutor groups on a daily basis whilst one role of the Housemasters and Housmistresses is to ensure the well-being of all pupils in their Houses. Relationships are developed between pupils of all ages in these tutor groups which ensure that a sense of belonging is developed from early on in a pupil’s time at the School. Additional support is provided in the First and Second Forms and in the Sixth Form by the Head of Juniors and Head of Sixth Form respectively.
