Team captains are obviously integral parts of all our teams, but at Sutton Valence School we try and develop leadership in all our players throughout all our teams.
Being a leader within a team requires a broad range of skills. Not only must an individual have good relationships with others, solid team-working skills and excellent organisational skills, but they must also be role models to others. These skills and attributes link directly to the three core values of SVS Sport, namely discipline, endeavour and excellence.
Leadership is deemed to be an important part of a student’s development within Sport at Sutton Valence because it directly relates to life beyond School. Leadership traits such as good communication, motivating others and working hard will see our students thrive as they take their next steps, in education and life. Sport is a hugely powerful tool in developing such traits.
Developing leadership skills
At Sutton Valence, we offer students a Sports Leaders option as part of their activities programme. These awards offer our students the opportunities to develop leadership skills within specially developed frameworks designed to equip young people with the knowledge and ability to create and lead activities. By building confidence over a number of sessions, students gain the skills that allow them to instigate peer-to-peer learning and the tremendous sense of achievement and self-pride of teaching someone something new.
Senior boys have the option of undertaking the England Rugby Football Union accredited, ‘Rugby Ready’ and ‘Scrum Factory’ courses and for the senior girls, we offer courses in Netball umpiring.
In our Physical Education curriculum, we engage students in all year groups in the Sport Education style of learning whereby the students become the coaches, officials, analysts and managers. Teaching their peers and analysing and evaluating performance.
