English as a Second Language

Sutton Valence School pupils achieve excellent results in Cambridge English, IGCSE and IELTS examinations

With approximately 1.5 billion speakers worldwide, English remains an important language to learn.  At Sutton Valence, we are delighted to welcome students from China, Russia, Germany, Poland, Bosnia Herzegovina, Spain and France.  As well as learning topic based vocabulary, grammar and preparing for examinations, students learn about British culture and values.  Pupils also have opportunities to share aspects of their own culture with us, for example, by giving a talk about the Chinese New Year.

Learning English as an Additional Language will enable pupils to:

  • Study towards an external qualification in English, such as the Cambridge First Certificate (FCE), Preliminary (PET), IGCSE or IELTS;
  • Access the academic curriculum by learning subject specific vocabulary and improving study skills such as summary writing and essay writing;
  • Adapt to studying and living at Sutton Valence School quickly and easily.

Junior Curriculum

In the First and Second Form, pupils have the opportunity to study for one of the Cambridge English examinations, for example, Preliminary (PET).  Some students only study with us for one year, so by completing a short course. This equips them with an external qualification in English.

Third Form Curriculum

In the Third Form, pupils may spend the Michaelmas Term studying towards one of the Cambridge English examinations, such as Preliminary (PET).  From January they will begin the IGCSE course.  However, there are exceptions.  Pupils who only stay with us for one year have the opportunity to study towards Cambridge First Certificate (FCE), which is a very popular examination for students from France and Spain.

All students have three lessons of English as an Additional Language (EAL) per week.  Classes are very small, ranging in size from one to four students.

IGCSE English as a Second Language (ESL)

Cambridge International Exams (CIE) is our chosen examination board for IGCSE English as a Second Language (ESL).

Throughout the course, students will study the following topics: travel and tourism, shopping, science and nature, health, fitness and sport, family and lifestyles, festivals and celebrations, the environment.

Assessment Structure:

  • One two hour paper (which assesses reading and writing) worth 70%
  • One 40 minute listening paper worth 15%
  • One 20 minute speaking test worth 15%

IELTS

In the Lower Sixth, if students are new to the school, they will take the Cambridge English IGCSE in English as a Second Language (ESL).  Lower Sixth Form students with a good grade at IGCSE and all Upper Sixth Formers study for the IELTS examination, which is required for entry to a British university.  Typically, universities require a level of 6.5/7.0/7.5, depending on the course chosen.  (The IELTS examination is only valid for two years).  We have developed links with Chaucer College, Canterbury and we arrange for students to sit the IELTS examination there.

Assessment Structure:

  • One three-hour paper testing listening, reading and writing
  • One speaking test lasting 20 minutes
  • Speaking, listening, reading and writing are worth 25% each

Department Staff:

Mrs Julie Manning has a BA Hons in German, a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), a Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) and a Post Graduate Diploma in Dyslexia and Literacy.  Mrs Manning has been teaching for many years; she has spent a period of eight years teaching English in Japan.
