Many people are good at talking about what they are doing, but in fact do little. Others do a lot but don't talk about it; they are the ones who make a community live.
Jean Vanier, Community and Growth
Community and care are central to what we believe in at the School and so I am very proud to be the co-ordinator for the Community Service programme. It allows our children the chance to experience what it feels like to put others above themselves and to care for those in our community.
It allows our privileged children to gain an understanding and insight into the lives of those whose experiences are very different from their own. It is run to allow our pupils to help others and, in doing so, grow in understanding and empathy. It brings rewards and opportunities in so many ways, to so many people; it is a pleasure to be a part of.
The Community Service programme involves the Lower Sixth Form students only. They go out regularly to their respective activities and work for approximately two hours helping others at the various placements. The students are, invariably, a credit to the School in terms of their attitude, loyalty and commitment to the activities. As volunteers, they have provided useful services to the local and wider community and each year we receive some wonderful messages of thanks for the work that the students do.
The programme runs with the help of a dedicated team of staff. The Sports department is supportive of the programme as, each year, a few dedicated Sixth Formers help to coach students in the lower years in various sports in School.
