Music

Not a day goes by without the sound of music-making echoing through the corridors of Underhill House!  You may hear voices raised in song as the children rehearse for one of their productions, or practise with Pre-Prep Choir.  You may hear the children strumming away in Ukulele Club or having fun with percussion instruments.  Or perhaps you may hear a star of the future taking their first steps towards virtuosity in their violin or piano lesson!

Music is an important part of life for musicians and non-musicians and, therefore, is embedded in the education of all children at SVPS.  We aim to help each child discover and expand their love of music right from the start of their time with us.

There are two half-hour music sessions each week for all classes, from Nursery to Year 2.  Singing is at the core of the Music curriculum in Pre-Prep, with an emphasis on good posture, breath control and tone from the outset.  The school has a good stock of percussion instruments, which are used for rhythm games, improvisation and composition.  The children listen to music in a variety of styles and from different cultures. The various elements of music are introduced and the foundations of music reading are laid, through musical games and activities.

Music also plays an important part in other areas of the curriculum, with class teachers using song and percussion to enhance learning. We believe it is vital that the children really enjoy their music-making and come away from lessons having had fun whilst learning.

In addition to their class Music lessons, there are two dedicated Music assemblies for Pre-Prep each week, when the children enjoy singing religious and secular songs together.

The children love taking part in productions too.  At Christmas, Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 each perform a nativity or Christmas play at our local church, St Michael’s.  The Year 1 play each Lent Term is always a highlight, recent productions being Scrapman in 2015 and The Wizard of Oz in 2016.  Year 2’s production takes place in the Summer Term; previous plays have included Sherlock Holmes: Cookie Conundrum which was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

In Year 2, individual music lessons are offered in Piano, Violin, Ukulele and Singing.  It is occasionally possible for lessons to start in Year 1; advice should be sought from the Director of Music.  An informal concert is held once a term, introducing performance in a safe and supportive environment.

After school, the children may take part in music clubs, such as the Pre-Prep Choir, Ukulele Club or the popular Percussion Club.
