Founder’s House is the only fully day House in the School. Our House colour is yellow; a good reflection of the sunny atmosphere that pervades the House.
Founder’s House pupils are encouraged at all times to take pride in themselves, try their best and reach their potential in both their academic careers and by making the most of all the School has to offer.
Throughout the year, all the students are encouraged to participate in the large number of House activities on offer. There is something for everyone, from archery to the ever-popular House Singing Competition. Founder’s House also run a number of special events, including film nights, highly competitive bowling trips and 'The Big Read', in which all the students are encouraged to read a certain book over the holidays.
All the students in the House are encouraged to recognise the importance of charitable giving. In the past year, we were very pleased to support two important charities, “The Smile Train”, which provides free cleft palate repairs in developing countries, and “Adoption UK”, which works hard to find forever homes for vulnerable children and to support their new families. We were delighted to raise over £1200 through our mufti day, Easter Egg deliveries from our very own Easter Bunny (a Sixth Former in a bunny suit!) and our very special event, Sutton Valence’s first ever Roller Disco, which was great fun for the whole school and a huge success.
Each student belongs to a small tutor group of about ten to twelve pupils. They will stay with their tutor all the way from the Third Form to the Upper Sixth, so we work hard to place each pupil with the right tutor, and the right group of fellow students, for them.
Tim Cope, Housemaster
It gives me great pleasure to have the opportunity to lead Founder’s House. Since joining the school in 2013, I have tutored in Founder’s and we have a proud history of respect and achievement. It is only a matter of time before we win that coveted house trophy! In my opinion, Founder’s is the best house in the School and our students walk around the School with a sense of pride and belonging. We have an extremely supportive, caring and experienced tutor team who always want the best for their charges and will go the extra mile to ensure that their school experience is a happy and fulfilling one. I would like to pass on two pieces of advice from my personal experience:
-Try something new, especially with the wide range of co-curricular activities available to each and every pupil.
-No regrets. Do not look back on your life at school and think ‘what if.’
Vince Wells, Assistant Housemaster
I joined SVS in 2008 as the Master i/c Cricket. Two years later I was invited to be a Tutor in Founders House and I have since taken on the added responsibility of being a Senior Tutor, which mainly involves organising our House teams for various events and activities throughout the year. These positions as well as in my role as Assistant Housemaster give me a great overview of the pupils in our wonderful house. Founders House is blessed with a dedicated group of tutors who help their tutees achieve their goals and to participate and enjoy all areas of school life.
I joined SVS in 2008 as the Head of History but one of my most rewarding responsibilities is being a tutor in Founder’s House. The pupils in Founder’s are very active fundraisers and have a strong competitive spirit and it's a privilege to support the participants in events. I enjoy helping pupils prepare for the House debating competition and guiding them to enable them to reach their full potential.
I have been a tutor at SV since starting at the school in 2002. My role as Head of Girls’ Games and Academic PE has helped me experience a variety of situations which has assisted my development as a tutor to all year groups. It’s always a pleasure to see any of my tutees out on the sports field representing the School!
