Blyth Bursary

The provision of bursaries widens educational opportunity to children from a greater range of backgrounds, which enriches our community.  As part of the legacy that our founder, William Lambe, worked so hard to achieve, we continue to value the importance of being inclusive and accessible to deserving children in the local area.

The Blyth Bursary was established through a generous legacy from an Old Suttonian family and seeks to support a local, talented child whose family’s financial circumstances would, under normal circumstances, preclude them from considering an education at Sutton Valence School.

The bursary may cover up to the full cost of a Sixth Form day or boarding place (both Upper and Lower Sixth) for one pupil, or may be split between more families if this is financially viable to the School and the quality of candidates dictates such a decision.

Application process

Applicants should apply through the normal means-tested bursary application process.  All candidates must, at least, meet our academic standards for entry and demonstrate suitable potential for future academic success.  We currently expect students wishing to enter our Sixth Form to gain 32 grade points or more across their top six GCSE subjects.  Those wishing to study Mathematics or the Sciences at A Level will need to have achieved at least grade 7 in each of the relevant subjects at GCSE. In addition, the School will wish to see reports from the candidate’s current school and there will be an interview with the Headmaster.

What will it cover?

The awarded percentage will be applied to tuition fees, and boarding fees if relevant.  Additional funding needs will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.  Provided that acceptable academic progress is maintained, the bursary will cover both academic years of Sixth Form study.  The bursary will be subject to an annual means-tested review.  Lunch and transportation costs are not covered by the bursary.
